A complete internet speed test reports more than one number. Download and upload are throughput (how much data per second). Ping and jitter are delay (how long a round trip takes). You need both views to judge whether a connection is good enough for how you use it.

Download speed

Download speed is how fast data reaches your device, in megabits per second (Mbps). Streaming, app updates, browsing and most “the internet feels slow” complaints are download-bound. SpeedMetric measures it by transferring real bytes from the test server — not by reading the browser’s rough estimate.

Upload speed

Upload speed is how fast you send data out. Video calls, cloud backups, live streams and sending large attachments depend on it. Many home plans are asymmetric: download is several times faster than upload. That is normal; it only becomes a problem when the upload side is too small for the calls or backups you actually run.

Ping (latency)

Ping is the round-trip time to the test server, in milliseconds. It is not a speed in Mbps. High ping makes games, calls and remote desktops feel laggy even when download looks fine. Distance to the server, Wi-Fi, and congested routes all add delay. SpeedMetric reports a median after discarding obvious outlier samples.

Jitter

Jitter is how much ping jumps from sample to sample. A stable 25 ms ping feels better than a 15–80 ms bounce. Voice and video calls are especially sensitive: codecs can hide a little jitter, but large swings show up as choppy audio or frozen frames. After a test, jitter appears with the rest of your connection details.

How SpeedMetric measures them

Latency is a tiny round-trip. Download streams live bytes in. Upload sends incompressible data out so the result is not inflated by compression. Throughput is transferred bytes over time across concurrent connections. A run typically finishes in about 8–12 seconds. What is a good ping?

Under about 30 ms feels snappy for games and calls. 50–80 ms is usable for most people. Over 100 ms, real-time apps start to feel delayed even if Mbps looks high.
